MINSA's Food Protection Department grants a five-year registro sanitario to the applicant company (with its plant number and legal representative), and the label must give the manufacturer's name, full address and telephone, the country of origin, the plant number (N° de Planta) and the registro sanitario number, with space reserved for it while registration is pending.
Labels filed for registration must be in Spanish as the official language and comply with national rules and Codex labelling standards: food name, ingredients, metric net content and drained weight, lot, expiry date, use and storage instructions and allergen warnings (e.g. "Atención Fenilcetonúricos: Contiene fenilalanina"); cosmetics follow Central American RTCA 71.03.36:21 as cited by MINSA's DNFD.
Any nutrition label must be backed by a laboratory study, specific declarations need certificates from the competent authority or MINSA-authorised bodies, and absence of characteristics the product does not naturally have may not be declared; for cosmetics DNFD notes RTCA 71.03.36:21 bans misleading claims and therapeutic claims.
